Shri Rama (the seventh incarnation of Shri Vishnu) was born in Treta Yuga to King Dashrath and his first Queen Kaushalya. And Devi Sita (the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi) was raised by King Janak and his queen Sunaina. Once, when Sita was growing, she lifted Lord Shiva Pinaka Dhanush. This is what Mahadev himself gave to her father. Interestingly, the bow could only be lifted by Lord Parshurama. After seeing little Sita miraculously lift the heavenly bow, King Janak decided to marry her to a prince equal to her divinity. A few years later, King Janak organized Swayamwar for Mata Sita.

Many kings and princes attended the Swayamwar, but Lord Shiva’s Pinaka could not even move by anyone. Interestingly, Sri Rama, who was present at the event along with his guru Vishwamitra and his brother Lakshman, also attended Swayamwar. And not only did he lift the Divine Bow without difficulty, but he also snapped it in two parts while connecting the string. After King Janak saw Sri Rama do the unthinkable, he shone with joy. Vivah Panchami in Nepal

Built-in 1911, the Janaki Temple is located at Janakpur Dham in the Dhanusa district of central Nepal and is one of Nepal’s unique monuments. This is not only due to the fact that it is the birthplace of the goddess Sita, wife of Lord Ram, one of the most heroic deities in the Hindu pantheon, but also due to its interesting architecture. Although Janakpur Dham was the capital of the ancient Mithila kingdom and was primarily a Hindu kingdom, the Janaki Temple shows many Mughal elements in its architecture. This is a bit strange as no evidence has yet been found that this particular area was dominated by Muslim rule and culture at any point in its history. Requested to be registered as a World Heritage Site.

Near the main temple is the Sita Ram Vivaha Mandir. This small temple was later built on the spot where Ram and Sita made seven circumambulations around the sacred fire to tie the marriage knot. This wedding is one of the most famous weddings for all Hindus, which is why many celebrate the first week of December every year (this year November 28, 2022), a day called Vivaha Panchami celebrated with luxury. The centerpiece of the celebration is of course the Sita Ram Vivaha Mandir at Janakpur Dham, but this historic event is celebrated with equal enthusiasm across the country.

Besides the many ponds in and around Janakpur Dham, there are some particularly sacred ponds. Two of them are Dhanush Sagar and Ganga Sagar near the Janaki Temple. These pools witness the influx of people for the Vivaha Panchami, which begins with a sacred ablution for all devotees. Oh yeah, there are thousands of them and it’s a very impressive sight.
