Vivah Panchami Vrat Katha or Story
Shri Rama (the seventh incarnation of Shri Vishnu) was born in Treta Yuga to King Dashrath and his first Queen Kaushalya. And Devi Sita (the incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi) was raised by King Janak and his queen Sunaina. Once, when Sita was growing, she lifted Lord Shiva Pinaka Dhanush. This is what Mahadev himself gave to her father. Interestingly, the bow could only be lifted by Lord Parshurama. After seeing little Sita miraculously lift the heavenly bow, King Janak decided to marry her to a prince equal to her divinity. A few years later, King Janak organized Swayamwar for Mata Sita.
Many kings and princes attended the Swayamwar, but Lord Shiva’s Pinaka could not even move by anyone. Interestingly, Sri Rama, who was present at the event along with his guru Vishwamitra and his brother Lakshman, also attended Swayamwar. And not only did he lift the Divine Bow without difficulty, but he also snapped it in two parts while connecting the string. After King Janak saw Sri Rama do the unthinkable, he shone with joy. And Devi Sita, delighted to see Sri Rama’s power, put Varmala around his neck and accepted him as her bridegroom.
Vivah Panchami Puja Vidhi or Ritual
- Avoid Rahu Kaal for Puja. Saturday Rahu Kaal is from 9 am to 10:30 am. Puja can be done before or after Rahu Kaal.
- Take a chowki (wooden stand) and cover it with a fresh yellow or red cloth.
- Place the idol of Shri Rama or Sita respectfully. You can also use images of the Lord and Goddess.
- Turn on the oil/ghee lamp.
- Bring your first prayers to Lord Ganesha so that you can conduct your puja without facing any hurdles. Offer water, flowers, fruits, Akshat, and Durva Grass, and pray to Lord Ganesha for blessings.
- After offering prayers to Lord Ganesha, initiates the wedding of Rama and Devi Sita.
- Offer Shri Rama and Devi Sita Haldi and Kumkum, followed by Red Chunni and Fresh Cloth, Shringar Samagri (Sindor, Bangles, Kajal, Mehendi, Artha, Bindi, and other accessories/jewelry, etc.) to the Devi. Mauli ( sacred thread or fresh yellow cloth) and Janu for the Lord.
- Chant OM Janaki Vallabhaya Namah while performing Gat Bandhan.
- For Gatbandhan you need two pieces of cloth. One is the Goddess’s costume and the other is Sri Rama’s costume.
- Pray for Sri Rama and Devi Sita for a blissful married life.
- Offer Gundam (Perfume), Pushapam (Flower), Deepam (Lamp), Doop (Incense), and edyam (Food).
- Serve Tamboolam consisting of paan, supari, banana, fruit, dakshina, haldi, kumkum, and n coconut, and divide the shell into two equal parts.
- Read Vrat Katha.
- Perform aarti to complete the puja.

Vivah Panchami in Nepal
