Children’s Day History

India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was born on November 14, 1889, into a Kashmiri Brahmin family. Known for his managerial skills and learning, his family migrated to Delhi in the early 18th century. He was the son of Motilal Nehru, a prominent lawyer, and leader of the Indian independence movement, who became one of Mahatma Gandhi’s prominent associates with him. Jawaharlal was the eldest of his four siblings, two of whom were girls. His sister Vijaya Lakshmi Pandit later became the first female President of the United Nations General Assembly.

Nehru is believed to have been called ‘Chacha Nehru’ by his children as he believed them to be the power of India. On another note, however, the former Prime Minister was nicknamed ‘Chacha’ for his proximity to Gandhi, who was all called ‘Bap’. Therefore, people suggested the nickname ‘Chacha’ for Jawaharlal Nehru as he was considered to be the younger brother of the nation’s father.

Nehru emerged as the leader of India’s struggle for independence in 1947 under the leadership of Gandhi. He laid the foundation for an independent India as a sovereign, socialist, secular, and democratic republic. Nehru, on the other hand, is considered the architect of modern India.

After the death of his Jawaharlal Nehru in 1964, the parliament unanimously passed a resolution honoring him and making his birthday the official Children’s Day. Before 1956, India celebrated Children’s Day every year on November 20th, as the United Nations declared the day Universal Children’s Day in 1954.
